Kabali Movie Review

Directed By: PA Ranjith
Produced By: Kalaipuli S Thanu
Cast: Rajinikanth, Winston Chao, Radhika Apte
Duration: 2 Hours 32 Minutes
Bollywood Bubble Rating: ★★★
There are films, and there are life altering experiences – Superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Kabali‘ is one such experience. Directed by PA Ranjith, this film can make you believe in miracles, and the existence of mermaids and dragons. It will not be wrong to say that ‘Kabali’ is an ultimate tribute to Rajinikanth’s die hard fans who have believed in everything that he has done in all his films over so many decades. In his latest outing Rajini sir plays the role of Kabaleeshwaran who is a gangster, but an ethical one at that. What does that mean? He is a self-proclaimed ‘gunda’ but he is against prostitution and drug rackets. He has perhaps unwillingly become a gangster to protect his people in Kuala Lumpur.
How does he protect his people? He funds a NGO that educates children and discourages them from getting into prostitution and drugs. He is basically a gangster with a heart of gold. We see his journey from being just another stooge to the ruling gangster back in the day, to his now super cool, suit and goggle clad avatar, playing to the gallery showing his swagger in every frame. Radhika Apte plays the role of Rupa, his wife – yes, it is hard to imagine her as Rajini sir’s wife, but she does a very good job of it – kudos to her. ‘Kabali’ begins with Rajini sir finishing his 25-odd years’ jail term and going back to his bad old ways, and then onwards it is a mix of past, present and utter suspension of disbelief.
One can’t help but sit in awe of the superstar who pulls off this role with such style and charisma even at his age. Coming back to ‘Kabali,’ it is an unabashed celebration of Rajinikanth’s superstardom. To raise the stake, the makers have thrown in Taiwanese actor, Winston Chao as Tony Lee, the main villain. Winston is Kabali’s arch rival in the gangster business, and he is tired of Kabali’s principals and ethics. He wants to take over the gangster world of Kuala Lumpur, and to do that he has to eliminate the ageing Kabali. In a normal world it would have been the simplest thing to do, but in Rajinikanth’s world, he is the KING, and he doesn’t tolerate any nonsense. He gets nostalgic every now and then, but he has his hands on the gun.
What is amusing is that Kabali is just chilling all the time, even with so many guns pointed at him, he will mouth his lines, flick his hands, show some swag, and get away with everything. Somewhere mid way in the film, the makers randomly throw in a daughter in the form of contract killer Yogi, played by the gorgeous Dhansika. To think of it, till the time the daughter’s existence is brought up, you were made to believe that his wife had died. BUT this is a Rajinikanth film where people come back from the dead. So Kabali along with his gangster daughter take up the task of eliminating the “bad” gundas, so that only “good” gundas run the local mafia. The last sentence may not have made sense, but it doesn’t really matter.
PA Ranjith’s ‘Kabali’ is a must watch for all the fans of Superstar Rajinikanth as he doesn’t disappoint one bit. He is still on top of his swag game, and gives all the cheap thrills that one seeks from his films. The film is made well, and it doesn’t bore you at any time – the supporting cast also delivers what has been promised in the trailer. The stunning visuals and brisk pacing makes the film a racy one time watch. Just don’t be a ‘rascal’ and go in expecting any logic, you will come back entertained like only how Rajini sir film can.

Sultan Movie Review:SALMAN KHAN’S BEST EIDI

Average Ratings:- ★★★★

Superstar Salman Khan‘s films releasing on an Eid festive is not a surprise, the films turning out to be huge blockbusters isn’t surprising either, but what came as a surprise in director Ali Abbas Zafar’s, ‘Sultan’ is the fact that Salman has worked extremely hard to play the titular role. With baddies flying all around him in all his action films, it looks effortless, or he makes it look like that. In ‘Sultan’ all the punches and kicks fall hard on him and the audience as well. By the time the film is over, you feel badly beaten up, yet feel happy for Sultan and his Aarfa, played amazingly well by Anushka Sharma.
In the form of ‘Sultan,’ Salman got his best Eidi, which he passed on to his fans, by adding his sweat and blood to it. To the director’s credit, ‘Sultan’ is everything against the grain of a typical Salman Khan film, yet manages to pack in all the things Salman Khan’s brand of cinema stands for. The trailer of the film is a total give away – you already know what will happen – but how, when and what is the question. Yash Raj Films seems to have gotten the template of this genre perfect – it’s almost a revisit to Chak De India – where a shamed sportsman reclaims his lost glory. The performances by the main actors is what stands out.
Salman has given a knock out performance, and so has Anushka. Wrestling is a tough sport that involves physical contact, and you are almost naked. It takes a lot to look like a believable wrestler and fight and win over those who look like serious professionals in the sport. The leading man and his fierce lady love come across as they have been wrestling all their lives – that itself if more than half the battle won. The supporting cast including Amit Sadh, Parikshit Sahni, Kumud Mishra and a  cameo by Randeep Hooda adds to the film and how! Mixed martial arts as a sport is intense and near fatal, and the director has used this to good effect.
The music by Vishal-Shekhar is slightly problematic – though the songs are good on their own, but they stick out in the narrative, especially the ‘440 volt’ sung by Mika Singh was easily avoidable. Having said that, the background music does justice to all the scenes. The editing credited to Rameshwar Bhagat takes you through Sultan’s journey, his rise, fall and final redemption smoothly. The cinematography by Artur Zurawski is so amazing that at many occasions you can feel the mud on your face. There are some scenes that are a bit hard to digest, but then it is a Salman Khan film after all.
Ali Abbas Zafar’s ‘Sultan’ makes you laugh, feel sad, cry, and cheer for him all through. There are moments between Sultan and Aarfa that are really heart wrenching, and you pray that may all good things happen to them. This is an all-round entertainer, and a must watch this festive season. Remember to carry some tissues, you can feel Sultan’s pain, both physical and emotional, the latter more than the former.
P.S. 1: In Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo, there was a plug for Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale, now in Sultan there is a plug for Aamir Khan’s Dangal. Watch the film and you’ll find out. Well done, Salman, we saw what you did.
P.S. 2: Eid Mubarak.

This is Salman’s most uninhibited as well as raw performances which fans will get to see. The audience will be amazed to see Salman getting out of his superstar status and getting under the skin of the character. The 50-year old actor has undergone intense training and his efforts for the physical transformation is visible in every frame. The story takes a bit to settle down.Fans might feel a little disheartened as Salman does not have a typical opening scene in the film and the build up to the introduction of his character takes some time. Post Sultan, director Ali Abbas Zafar is surely going to become one of the most sought after directors in Bollywood. The director has shot the film brilliantly and also made sure justice is done to the story. The script is the King of the film.
